The Illinois State Board of Education uses the ICTS Social Science: Geography Test to certify teachers. The exam has content relating to generalized information on social sciences and geography. It is a standardized, criterion-referenced, objective-based test with 125 multiple-choice questions. The ICTS Social Science: Geography Test is divided into three subareas: Social Science Foundations; History Common Core; and World Geography and Its Influence on Contemporary Issues.
There are 18 broad objective statements within the three main subareas. Each objective statement includes descriptive statements that define the ability to demonstrate and use the content knowledge. Passing the ICTS Social Science: Geography Test requires a total score of 240 or higher. Scores are mailed out four weeks after the test is given. The total score is sent along with scores for each subarea, which gives those who take the test the opportunity to improve performance in their problem areas.
