The Illinois State Board of Education uses the ICTS Reading Teacher Test to certify reading teachers. This standardized, criterion-referenced, objective-based test consists of 125 multiple-choice questions based on the Content Area Standards for Educators. There are four subareas in the ICTS Reading Teacher Test: Language, Reading, and Literacy; Reading Instruction; Assessment; and Professional Roles and Responsibilities.
The four subareas of the exam are divided into 21 objective statements. Each objective statement is a broad statement covering the material. There are more specific descriptive statements that assess one's capacity to identify and demonstrate a deeper understanding of the material. The ICTS Reading Teacher Test requires a total score of 240 or higher to pass. The scores are mailed out four weeks after the test date. The report includes the total test score and a score for each subarea, allowing the recipient to see individual strengths and weaknesses.
