The ICTS content-area test for the Chief School Business Official is made up of 125 multiple-choice questions. The test is a criterion-referenced, objective-based exam used to determine the school employees' knowledge of the subject according to the guidelines of the Illinois Content Area Standards for Educators. The ICTS Chief School Business Official Test is divided into the following three subareas: School Business Management; School Finance; and School Organization, Services, Operations, and Safety. The main subareas cover 21 objectives. It is necessary to demonstrate basic understanding of the different objectives as well as of the specific procedures necessary to apply this knowledge.
A total score of 240 is required to pass the ICTS Chief School Business Official Test. After four weeks, the total score is reported along with a score for each subarea, which allows the test taker to identify subareas that need improvement.
